best way is to take a piece of paper and wrap it around the thickest part when it-s hard and then mark with a pen the spot where the paper overlaps.
then flatten out the paper and get a ruler and measure the distance from the edge of the paper to the pen mark. voila!..there-s the thickness.

The standard way is as follows:

Hold your penis out in front of you (parallel with the floor). With your other hand, wrap the tape measure around the centre of the penis shaft, making sure not to pull too tight. Read the measurement.

1) Make your penis hard
2) Place a fabric ruler at the widest part of your penis and wrap it carefully around one time.
3) Mark the spot where the string first touches (overlap)

the easiest way is to get sticky tape and wrap it around the base of your dick then just cut it and measure how long the tape was.
